The S-Works Tarmac is this week’s “Bicycle of the Week.” For the past few weeks, we have been bringing you the bicycles that the top riders will be riding in this year’s Tour De France. As expected, Remco Evenepoel’s ride is no ordinary machine. It’s a blend of precision and passion. The frame, a Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 in a sleek 52cm size, forms the backbone of this masterpiece. Lightweight yet robust, it’s crafted for speed and stability.

Complementing this lightweight frame is the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 9250 12-rides of americasspeed group set, ensuring every shift is swift and seamless, a true marvel of modern engineering. The Shimano Dura-Ace 9270 hydraulic disc brakes offer unparalleled stopping power, giving Remco the confidence to tackle any descent.

The wheelset is a tale of versatility. On challenging terrains, the Roval Alpinist CLX II wheels come into play, while the Roval Rapide CLX II wheels shine on flatter courses.  While the deeper Rapide CLX II wheels are used for flat terrains, he often switches to the lower-profile Roval Alpinist CLX II wheels when the road goes upward.

Wrapped in Specialized S-Works Turbo Cotton 26mm tires with latex inner tubes, the ride is smooth and fast. The Roval Rapide 38cm aerodynamic handlebars provide control and comfort, paired with the Shimano Dura-Ace FC-9200P chainset featuring 54/40T rings and 165mm crank arms.

This setup, complete with a power meter, ensures Remco’s performance is always at its peak. From Shimano Dura-Ace R9200 pedals to the Specialized S-Works Tarmac mirror power saddle, every component is selected for optimal performance. Tacx Ciro bottle cages and Elite Crono bottles keep hydration in check, while Supacaz super sticky kush bar tape and a Garmin computer round out this impeccable setup of elite cycling equipment.

PUNCTURE PROTECTION: TUBULAR VS. TUBELESS

While the S-Works Tarmac SL8 offers the capacity to accommodate larger tires, the team typically opts for 26mm rubber except in extraordinary conditions. The choice of Specialized S-Works Turbo Cotton tires with cotton sidewalls and latex inner tubes is driven by their ability to minimize rolling resistance, providing a smoother and faster ride.

However, these features come with a trade-off. Despite their performance benefits, cotton sidewalls and latex inner tubes do not offer the same level of puncture protection as tubeless tires. Tubeless setups inherently provide superior puncture resistance due to the absence of an inner tube, which can pinch and puncture more easily.

Additionally, the sealant used in tubeless tires helps automatically seal minor punctures, offering an extra layer of security and durability on the road. There’s room for bigger tires on this year’s S-Works Tarmac, but the team tends to opt for 26mm rubber in all but exceptional circumstances.

PERFORMANCE MEETS PRECISION

A Dura-Ace power meter is at the heart of Remco’s S-Works Tarmac, ensuring every watt is measured with pinpoint accuracy. The cadence magnet works seamlessly with this setup, capturing every pedal stroke. Interestingly, the team may feature a 4iiii power meter this season, showcasing the team’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge cycling technology.

The Dura-Ace pedals are another standout. Remco is using oversized bearings that are built for maximum efficiency and reliability. Every pedal stroke is smooth, transferring power directly to the drivetrain. Due to the UCI’s new regulations, you’ll notice straight hoods now.

The inwardly turned position is a thing of the past, aligning with the latest compliance requirements. This adjustment doesn’t just adhere to the rules—it enhances bike ergonomics and control, giving Remco the edge he needs in every competitive cycling race.
